Blazers Claim Gold in 4x100 Meter Relay at Georgia Tech Invitational

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB track and field team closed competitions at the Georgia Tech Invitational on Saturday afternoon, posting several impressive marks.
"Despite the cold rain, the girls competed hard and came away with some solid performances," head coach Kurt Thomas said.
The Blazers' 4x100 meter relay team of Melany Frierson, Ebony Tolliver, Louise Wieland and Alyssa Nelson took gold, finishing with a time of 46.16. The win marked the fourth straight weekend in which UAB has won at least one event.
The 400 meter hurdles saw Marielle Lewis finish in the top-five, coming in third with a time of 1:02.15.
Celestial Moon and Tolliver both finished in the top-10, as Moon came in seventh in the 800 meters with a 2:13.62 and Tolliver finished eighth in the 400 meters with a 57.11.
Shauntia Landrum wrapped up the top-15 finishes for the Blazers as she notched a 11.23 meter mark in the triple jump.
"The 4x100 win was really good and Alyssa competed hard to grab the win," said Thomas. Marielle raced well in the 400 meter hurdles, as did Cele in the 800m. The 400m girls raced well and Ebony had a good performance."

Also competing this weekend in Durham, N.C. at the Duke Invitational were seniors Emily Drouin and Katie Nelson. The pair ran in the 5000 meter race and both came out with a top-ten finish. Drouin placed fifth with a time of 16:33.36M followed by Nelson who finished in eighth place with a time of 16:53.90.
The Blazers will take next weekend off in preparation for the Conference USA Championships, which will be held May 9-12 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
