MILWAUKEE- UAB men's soccer fell to Marquette 2-1 in a double overtime heartbreaker Friday night in Milwaukee.
It was a tale of two halves for the Blazers who started off slow being out shot 13-4 in the first half. The defense was tested early as Marquette kept the ball in the Blazers half of the field for the first 20 minutes of the match.
In the 23rdminute the Golden Eagles were awarded a penalty kick after Donovan Watson fouled a Marquette player inside the box. Marquette's Connor Alba converted the penalty kick putting his team up 1-0, a score that would hold until halftime.
In the second half the Blazers came out firing. Grayson Dupont tallied the equalizer and the first goal of the season for the Blazers off a cross from Chase Rushing in the 46thminute. UAB continued to put pressure on the Golden Eagles in the second half but could not find the back of the net again.
"We came out in the second half the way we wanted to start the game," said head coach Jeff Kinney. "With a team full of new players playing in a match that actually counts I think we had to work out some nervous legs early on.
In the 99thminute of the first overtime the Blazers had a great scoring opportunity after a handball set up a free kick from 23 yards out. Sophomore Nathaniel St. Louis' ball went just under the wall of Golden Eagles, but a deflection allowed the goalkeeper to make the save.
In the 104thminute of the second overtime Kevin Wallace nearly ended the game but his header hit just off the top cross bar.
Marquette's game winner came in the 107thminute when Manuel Cujak headed the ball in the goal off a set piece from Connor Alba.
"I was proud of how they bounced back from a rough start. I think they know now how good they can be," added Kinney.
The Blazers will look to rebound against Wisconsin on Sunday at 7 p.m.
