BIRMINGHAM- The UAB men's soccer team will start the Jeff Kinney era off with a two-game road trip to Wisconsin this weekend.
First, the Blazers will travel to Milwaukee to face Marquette in their opening game on Friday night. UAB holds a 10-9-0 all time record over Marquette but this will be the first meeting between the two since 2004 when the Blazers defeated the Golden Eagles in Milwaukee by a score of 2-1.
Marquette ended the 2018 season with a 7-9-3 record finishing fourth in the Big East. They recorded two wins over top ranked opponents Villanova (No. 13) and Creighton (No. 17). The Golden Eagles return 14 letter winners this season.
"Opening the season with a match against a team from the Big East will allow us to find out where we are as a team," said head coach Jeff Kinney. "Marquette returns a number of players from a team that played in the Big East final last season."
UAB will hop on the bus and make the hour and a half drive to Madison, Wisc. to take on Wisconsin on Sunday night. This will mark the first meeting between the two programs.
The Badgers finished the 2018 season with a 10-6-2 record ranking second in the Big Ten. Wisconsin had three seniors receive preseason Big Ten Honors; goalkeeper Dean Cowdroy, midfielder Noah Leibold and defender Robin Olofsson.
"Wisconsin is always one of the top teams in the Big Ten," Kinney added. "We want to be able to compete with the best in the country and you do that by scheduling tough competition on the road. Our guys are eager to play in a match that goes down in the record books, as am I."
The Blazers will be tested early on the road before returning home next Friday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. for the home opener against Mercer in the Soccer for a Cure tournament.
Men's soccer season tickets are on sale by purchasing the 2019-20 Gold Card for $65. The Gold Card is an exclusive offer that grants you admission into all UAB men's and women's soccer, volleyball, women's basketball, baseball and softball events for the upcoming academic year.
