Men's Soccer Celebrates Senior Day in Home Finale
10/27/2022 2:36:00 PM | Men's Soccer
BIRMINGHAM - UAB men's soccer (3-8-3, 1-4-2 AAC) will close out the 2022 home slate against Temple (4-8-2, 1-6-0 AAC) on Friday night at 7 p.m. CT. The Blazers will recognize five seniors (Brooks Rice, Teodor Thorvaldsen, Willsey League, Nathaniel St. Louis and Jack Hudson) with a presentation before the match. The contest will stream live on ESPN+.
SERIES HISTORY
The two sides have never met. Temple is the sole member of The American that has not been in the same conference as UAB at any point. This will be the two institutions' first meeting as conference foes in any sport.
OFFICIALLY AAC
UAB men's soccer is the first of all Blazer programs to join the American Athletic Conference. While each of the other UAB programs will join the league in 2023, men's soccer became an affiliate member for the 2022 season due to C-USA no longer supporting men's soccer.
COMMON OPPONENTS
Each side has won one AAC match on the season. The Blazers picked up points against South Florida and Tulsa with draws, while defeating UCF. The Owls defeated Florida Atlantic for their three points in conference play.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE BLAZERS
UAB fell on the road to FIU. The Panthers scored a pair of goals in the first 10 minutes of the match and led from start to finish. Guillermo Rodriguez scored his first goal of the season and Curtis DeLeon picked up his fifth assist of the year.
SCOUTING THE OWLS
Eoin Gawronski has been the Owls' primary keeper in 2022, starting 10 of their 14 matches. He holds a 1.83 GAA and a .743 save percentage with three shutouts. Temple has a balanced attack on the offensive end. Five different players have scored at least two goals. Mike Eijgendaal leads the team with six assists.
WE'RE ALL FROM SOMEWHERE
UAB men's soccer has student-athletes from six states and eight different countries (Norway, Canada, Germany, Spain, Israel, Hungary, Austria). Alabama is the most well-represented state with nine Blazers and Norway is the most well-represented country outside of the U.S. with three players (Thorvaldsen, Love Groth, Overland).
LOTS OF NEW FACES
UAB brings in many new faces for the 2022 season. The Blazers added 19 newcomers during the offseason to add depth to the rotation.
THE VETERANS
Brooks Rice, Nathaniel St. Louis and Curtis DeLeon have led the way for UAB so far on the offensive end. St. Louis leads the Blazers with five goals on the year while Rice has added three of his own. DeLeon has assisted on five of UAB's 13 goals. His five assists are the most by a Blazer since 2015.
TOUGH SCHEDULE
UAB has already faced off with five ranked opponents during the 2022 slate in Clemson, Wake Forest, Charlotte, Tulsa and SMU. Both Clemson and Wake Forest were ranked inside of the top five teams in the nation when they faced the Blazers.
HUDSON'S BRILLIANCE IN GOAL
Graduate student Jack Hudson has been a standout for the Blazers in goal throughout the 2022 season. He was named AAC Goalkeeper of the Week for his performance against then-No. 18/12 Tulsa. Against then-No. 1 Clemson, Hudson made a career-high 10 saves. He followed up that performance against the high-powered attack of No. 23 SMU with eight saves.
