UAB Defeats West Alabama, Falls to Tennessee Tech in Friday's Home Doubleheader

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB men's tennis team closed out its home schedule with a victory in match two of Friday's doubleheader, besting in-state foe West Alabama 4-3 at the Lakeshore Tennis Courts.
The Blazers dropped their opening match to Tennessee Tech 6-1 on Friday as UAB finished 4-3 in home matches this season.
UAB 4, WEST ALABAMA 3
After dropping the doubles point, UAB responded with four wins in singles play to finish its 2022 home season with a victory. Noah Malige tied match two on Friday with a swift 6-1, 6-1 victory on court six over West Alabama's Miguel Gamborino.
West Alabama would retake the lead at 2-1 with a win on court three, but the Blazers would reel off three straight wins on courts one, four and two to seal the win. Michal Lusovsky continued his hot streak with his second win of the day and 15th victory of the season, defeating UWA ace Illari Vesanen 6-4, 6-4.
Thanos Spyropoulos put the Blazers within one point of a team victory with a 7-5, 6-4 win on court four. Roman Postolka then rallied from a defeat in set one to clinch the match for UAB on court two, posting a 5-7, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 win over West Alabama's Nutti Jokinen.
Martin Vasquez would drop a tight three-set battle on court five to conclude Friday's doubleheader, falling 4-6, 6-3, 5-7.
TENNESSEE TECH 6, UAB 1
The doubles point was tight on all three courts as two of the three matches went into tiebreakers. Unfortunately for UAB, Tennessee Tech picked up wins on Courts 1 and 2 – both 7-6. The doubles pairing of Nikola Puric and Thanos Spyropoulos were ahead 6-5 on Court 3 when the point was decided.
The Golden Eagles won five of the six singles matches to seal their 6-1 victory. On court one, Michal Lusovsky picked up his 14th victory of the season after a straight-set 6-4, 6-1 win over TTU ace Elias Grubert. Tennessee Tech won the remaining singles matches in straight sets.

UAB will conclude its regular season schedule Sunday when the Blazers battle in-state foe Jacksonville State (7-9). Sunday's match at the JSU Tennis Courts in Jacksonville, Alabama, is set to begin at 1 p.m.
