UAB Wins Fifth Straight With Comeback Victory Over Marshall

BIRMINGHAM – Matthew Golda delivered a go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead the UAB baseball team to a 3-2 comeback victory on Saturday afternoon at Young Memorial Field. The comeback win marked UAB's second straight comeback win of the series and the Blazers' fifth straight victory overall.
UAB (19-7, 5-3 C-USA) faced a 2-0 deficit after the top of the fourth when Kyle Schaefer doubled Marshall's lead with a solo home run to lead off the fourth frame. The Blazers would respond one inning later, scoring two runs in the fifth to tie the game at 2-2.
After a leadoff walk and then a stolen base from John Marc Mullins, Branden Willougby singled on an 0-2 pitch to put runners at the corners with nobody out in the fifth. Cleanup batter Christian Hall would then lift a sacrifice fly to left field to trim UAB's deficit to left field. Caleb Floyd would tie the game one at-bat later, delivering a clutch two-out single to bring home Willoughby from second.
UAB starter Tyler O'Clair kept the Blazers in striking distance with six strong innings, allowing only one earned run and striking out a season-high nine batters. O'Clair also allowed only six hits and three walks, facing the minimum twice in Saturday's win.
The Blazer bullpen then stepped up with back-to-back shutdown performances, allowing only three hits over three scoreless innings to conclude the ballgame. Dalton Skinner, JC Sewell, Brady Greene and Collin Taylor kept the Thundering Herd off the scoreboard over the final third of the game. Greene, who struck out two batters in a scoreless eighth, earned his third win of the season out of the bullpen.
In the bottom of the eighth, Logan Braunschweig singled through the right side with one out before swiping second to get into scoring position. Golda then delivered the game-winning hit on a 1-2 pitch, smacking a single to right field to bring home Braunschweig. Taylor would slam the door in the ninth following UAB's go-ahead run in the eighth, retiring the top of Marshall's batting order 1-2-3 for his team-high sixth save.
All nine Blazers in the starting lineup reached base in Saturday's win, including eight via a base hit. Willoughby, Floyd and Golda each finished with two-hit performances.
With the win, first-year head coach Casey Dunn has led the Blazers to 19 wins in his first 26 games, surpassing UAB's win total from the entire 2021 season.
UAB will go for the sweep in Sunday's series finale against the Thundering Herd. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. and will be streamed live on CUSA.tv.
