Track & Field Closes Out Blazer Invite On the Upside

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB Track & Field Team concluded the first meet of two at the Blazer Invitational with quality performances and room to improve as they gear up for the following day.
"Overall, we saw some good execution of some events," said head coach Kurt Thomas on the team's performance. "There's obvious rustiness from the break, as all teams are dealing with. The throwers came out and hit some solid throws. Almost all hurdlers set season bests with a few PRs like Taylor Washington, Sydney Mitchell, and Synai Jones. We all need consistency in training and competing at this point."
The meet began with throwing events, where Zoria Miller closed out the weight throw with a personal best of 11.26m. Tia Espinoza followed with a personal best of her own in the weight throw with a distance of 11.46m. In addition to the performances in the weight throw, both Miller and Birthe Franck-Petersen made the finals in shot put.
On the track, distance flourished, specifically in the 3K. "The major highlight was Kathleen and Lauren Charlton's big 3K. They ran massive PRs, almost 30 seconds for Kathleen and almost 20 for Lauren. Those should hold up to top times in CUSA this season." said Thomas.
In the 1K, Sangie Lincoln-Velez and Alicia Abalos-Cervera closed out positively in their performances.
Makiyah Sills and Kat Duren progressed from the preliminary round to the finals in the 60m hurdles where both had appearances representing the Blazers. In the running events, the Blazers finished with several PRs and season bests.
UP NEXT
The Blazers return to action to compete in the Vulcan Invite on Saturday, December 14 at 9 AM.
"We have a select few competing in our second meet on Saturday. The field venters will get more chances to compete and sharpen up. Whether they compete on day 2 or not, we can see where we are, learn from the positives and negatives and continue to improve next week." said Thomas.
