Blazers Conclude Pentathlon Performances at Multi-Invite

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB Track & Field Team had a light load on the first day of the Samford Multi-Invite. Haley Dempsey, Averie Foster, and Mya McDanal were the trio that made their appearance at the Birmingham Crossplex Thursday afternoon.
"I think they did well for their first pentathlon," said coach Jordon Andreassen on today's performances. "Several personal bests from all three of them today. I am happy with how they performed, but we still have work to do."
The Blazers competed in the traditional pentathlon events: long jump, high jump, 60m hurdles, shot put, and the 800m. Because this was the Blazers' first time competing in this event, they created a baseline for future pentathlons while improving their personal performances.
Dempsey set a PR in two categories: the 60m hurdles and the high jump. Foster followed suit with a PR in the high jump, besting her previous PR she set in the Vulcan Invite. McDanal joins the three with a PR in the long jump, beating out her PR from the Icebreaker in December.
With positives, comes improvement. For Coach Adreassen, the 800 is a point of emphasis to build on for future pentathlons. "We need to work on the last event (800m) and knowing when to push during the race. The first half was executed perfectly, now to improve that second half and should all come together."
QUOTES FROM JORDON ANDREASSEN
"I saw improvement in all of the events. This was their first-ever pentathlon. They all went out there and gave their all in each event."
"These three showed passion, and grit and never quit today, which will translate into next week's training."
