BIRMINGHAM – The UAB Track & Field Team concluded their competition at the Samford Invite with a series of impressive marks at the Birmingham Crossplex Friday evening. Though the competition pool was smaller than usual, the numbers were enough to break the record books.
"This was an opportunity for young athletes to get some more competing experience, hence the smaller number of athletes competing," said head coach Kurt Thomas on the team's performance. "Several athletes came away with great performances. Kathleen Schellman raced a great mile and Trinity Fellows vaulted her way to a nice PR in the pole vault."
Only one Blazer represented field events at the meet, but it was enough to crest the top ten performances in her event. Trinity Fellows bested her previous mark in the pole vault with a jump of 3.58m. Her mark pushed past Julianne Manning and Anna Massa's indoor mark of 3.55m, putting her in the fifth place all-time best pole vault performance for indoor.
In running events, particularly distance, showed numerous personal bests. Freshman Kyra Hayes closed out with a PR in the 3K, finishing third in her section.
Lauren Robinson also had a strong finish in the mile, sprinting to secure a finish in the top three at the line in section four. Schellman led the Blazers, finishing top ten in the event with a 5:03.55, a PR.
In the 800, Sangie Lincoln-Velez finished in the top ten with her second place finish in section three and a sixth-place finish overall. Alicia Abalos-Cervera joined Lincoln-Velez in the top ten with a fourth-place finish overall.
QUOTES FROM KURT THOMAS
"Climbing up the school record books is always important. It's a good accomplishment and shows they're doing well."
UP NEXT
The Blazers hit the road to compete in the Bluegrass State, where they compete at the University of Louisville at the PNC Lenny Lyles Invite on January 27th and 28th.
"Competing in the moment is always important. Whether it's your heat of a race, your flight of a field event, trying to compete in your surroundings is important. Trying to qualify for a final is a great experience as we get closer to bigger meets and championship meets." said Thomas.
