BIRMINGHAM – UAB men's basketball (17-7, 8-5 C-USA) held on to beat FIU (12-12, 6-7 C-USA) at Bartow Arena, 76-72. The Blazers led by as many as 19 points in the first half but struggled with turnovers throughout the contest. Trey Jemison finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds, including the game-clinching tip-in with nine seconds to go.
After FIU knocked down a jumper to put the score at 14-13 in the first half for the Blazers, UAB went on a 19-1 run over the next five minutes to take a 19-point, 33-14 lead with five minutes to go. The Blazers led 42-28 at the half. Eight different players scored for UAB in the first half, compared to just three for FIU.
The Panthers picked up the pressure early in the second half, cutting the Blazers' lead to just seven after two minutes of game time. UAB was able to bounce back and work the advantage back to 16 points with eight minutes to go.
FIU was able to go on a 18-2 run, erasing the Blazers' lead by the 2:24 mark at 70-70. On the ensuing UAB possession, Jordan Walker knocked down a critical three-pointer to put UAB back in front. A goaltending call on the other end allowed the Panthers to cut it to a one-point game.
The Blazers had the ball with under a minute to go and the clock winding down. Eric Gaines was not able to get his floater to go, but Trey Jemison tipped it in to give UAB a 75-72 lead. After FIU could not convert, Walker knocked down one of two free throws to ice the game with one second to go.
