BIRMINGHAM – UAB men's basketball (17-8, 8-6 C-USA) fell, 82-79, in double overtime to North Texas (20-5, 11-3 C-USA) in a tightly contested game. Five Blazers finished in double-figures for the second-consecutive game. Neither team led by more than seven points at any point.
Tylor Perry led the way for the Mean Green with 28 points while playing over 45 minutes. North Texas went 23-for-25 from the free throw line while the Blazers struggled to get to the line and convert, going 5-for-10.
It was a back-and-forth contest throughout each half and overtime. North Texas took a 28-21 advantage late in the first half after an Ousmane bucket, but the Blazers answered right back with a jumper to cut the lead back to five. The Mean Green led 30-25 at the half.
The Blazers fought their way back into the game and built a five-point lead of their own after Jordan Walker knocked down threes on back-to-back possessions and Tavin Lovan converted at the rim to make it 50-45.
North Texas then went on an 8-0 run to take a lead of their own before Ledarrius Brewer erased it with his second three of the night.
UAB led 62-59 with under one minute to go. Perry missed a potential game-tying three pointer, but North Texas grabbed the offensive rebound and called a timeout. Perry was able get into the lane for a layup to make it a 62-61 game. After a few intentional fouls from UNT to put the Blazers on the free throw line, Walker missed the first of his 1-and-1 attempts and North Texas grabbed the rebound.
The Mean Green had a chance to win the game with a basket on the final possession of regulation. Aaron Scott was fouled with 2.5 seconds on the clock for a chance to win the game. After missing the first free throw, Scott hit the second to tie it up and send the game to overtime.
The Blazers got off to a hot start in the first overtime period. After Jordan Walker hit a three on the first possession, Ledarrius Brewer dropped in a floater to put UAB up 67-62. North Texas erased the lead over the next few possessions, tying it right back up.
Trey Jemison knocked down a pair of free throws with just over a minute to go, giving UAB a two-point advantage. On the ensuing possession, Kai Huntsberry drove, scored and drew a foul. He was able to convert from the free throw line, giving UNT its first lead of overtime.
Trailing by three points with time running out, the ball found KJ Buffen in the corner and he knocked down a game-tying three with just five seconds to go. The North Texas heave at the buzzer was no good and the game went to a second overtime.
In the second overtime period, the margin never went beyond three points for either team. Both sides traded leads until the one-minute mark. Huntsberry got in the lane and hit a floater, giving North Texas the lead. He scored the final eight points for UNT while going 6-for-6 from the free throw line to hold off the Blazers, 82-79.
