BIRMINGHAM – UAB Track & Field Travels to the Lone Star State for the C-USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by UNT. The Championships are from Thursday, May 11 to Sunday, May 14 at the UNT Soccer and Track & Field Stadium.
The Blazers completed regular season competition at the 2023 Maroon and White Invite where the Blazers finished with notable performances, PRs, and top-ten times in the conference. UAB enters the postseason with 19 top-ten conference performances.
"We are excited to compete at these outdoor championships. UAB is a charter member of this conference, so this being our last meet as a C-USA member is special," said head coach Kurt Thomas. "This group of young ladies worked hard, been through ups and downs, and persevered to get here. We always have a goal of each athlete finishing this meet with either a PR or a seasonal best. We are here to compete at our best, and that's what we expect to happen."
The competition begins Thursday at 2:45 PM with the heptathlon. Athletes participating at the Conference Meet include Laney Kronz and Megan Hamilton Strong, who both sit in the top eight in the conference for the heptathlon. Hamilton Strong also had a PR performance at the Tennessee Invite with a score of 4559.
In distance, Lauren Charlton is the sole Blazer running in the 10K on Friday, while Britney Johnson and Kyra Hayes will run in the 3000m Steeplechase. Charlton, Hayes, and Johnson will also run in the 5K on Sunday.
On Saturday, Averie Foster and Shauntia Landrum will make a showing in the long jump and triple jump. Landrum holds a team-best and season-best performance of 5.79m (LJ) at the Crimson Tide Invite in April. In hurdles, five Blazers will compete in the women's 100m. The USTFCCCA Top 40 ranked hurdle corps includes Makiyah Sills and Kat Duren who will run in the first heat.
Closing out the day on Sunday, The Blazers will compete in the 4x400m relay, with Alicia Abalos-Cervera, Regina Harris, Jabriana Jemison, and Eriyanna Reed representing the Blazers.
"We have several athletes going into the meet with scoring expectations. Lauren Charlton and the distance crew have great chances at points," said Thomas. "Our hurdlers, Kat and Mak and others are set up for points also. Our Heptathletes, Megan and Laney are in a position for the same. This is a great group of athletes and we're excited to see them perform."
