BIRMINGHAM – UAB men's basketball (11-6, 3-1 AAC) dominated the paint in an 83-69 win over Tulane (11-6, 2-3 AAC) on Wednesday night. The Blazers outscored the Green Wave, 48-28, in the paint and outrebounded Tulane, 49-29.
Alejandro Vasquez had a career night for UAB, scoring 28 points and grabbing six rebounds. He and Efrem "Butta" Johnson got the Blazers going in the first half after a slow start to the contest gave Tulane an early 22-12 lead over UAB.
The duo helped the Blazers cut the margin down and eventually take the lead with six minutes to go in the first half after back-to-back dunks from Yaxel Lendeborg and Christian Coleman. The Blazers led 39-33 at the break after a Barry Dunning dunk punctuated the half.
UAB maintained its lead throughout the second half as Johnson and Vasquez stepped up to hit big shots.
Late in the second half, the Green Wave cut UAB's lead down to just three points at 63-60 after a Sion James three. Alejandro Vasquez got to the rim on the next possession to make it a two-possession game once again and then Christian Coleman got by the defense for a dunk to take the momentum back.
Tulane answered right back with a three-point play, but Vasquez knocked down a three moments later, sparking a 14-2 run that put the game away in the final minutes.
