SERIES HISTORY
The Blazers lead the all-time series 12-6, but the Pirates have won the last three matchups and five of the last six meetings.
LAST TIME OUT
UAB picked up a conference win over Tulane on Wednesday night by a score of 83-69. Alejandro Vasquez led the Blazers with 28 points and six rebounds, both career bests. The interior was dominated by UAB all night, as the Blazers outrebounded the Green Wave 49-29 and outscored them 48-28 in the paint.
SMOOTH LIKE "BUTTA"
After a freshman season that featured some impressive moments, Efrem "Butta" Johnson has high expectations in year two. Johnson averaged 3.5 points and 1.3 rebounds per game last year while shooting 37.8 percent from beyond the arc and is set to take on a much larger role. Johnson scored 17 points against Clemson earlier this season while adding three rebounds and three assists. He later set a career high with 18 points, including the game-winning three against Alcorn State. Johnson stepped up once again in the clutch against UTSA, scoring the final 10 points, including the game-winner with two seconds to go. "Butta" put up 15 points and dished out a career high six assists in a win over Tulane.
PROTECTING THE RIM
The Blazers have blocked 74 shots over 17 games this season, led by Yaxel Lendeborg with 36 rejections. UAB blocked at least five shots in four straight games from Nov. 12-25, its longest such streak since the 2015-16 season. Nine different players have blocked at least one shot this season.
BONNIE TO A BLAZER
Alejandro Vasquez began his career at St. Bonaventure, helping the Bonnies reach the NCAA Tournament during his freshman season while averaging 6.3 points per game. Vasquez played two seasons with the Bonnies before finding himself at Salt Lake Community College in Utah. He averaged 18.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game last year, earning first team NJCAA All-American honors. Vasquez has been a standout this season for UAB, averaging 10.8 points and 3.4 rebounds per game, including three 20+ point performances including a 28-point outburst against Tulane.
