Clark Leads Women’s Soccer to 1-0 Win Against Tulsa

BIRMINGHAM – UAB women's soccer (6-4-4, 3-2-3 AAC) picked up its sixth win of the season on Thursday night, downing Tulsa (7-8-2, 3-5-0 AAC) by a score of 1-0.
Maiya Clark's first half goal in the 22nd minute was the difference in the match, which was assisted by Abbey Burns. Clark's goal was the first of her collegiate career.
"Fantastic performance from the team," head coach Lisa Mann said. "After ECU we talked about getting back to what we are known for and that is clean sheets, and the team did a great job again today. Our forwards are stepping up big time at this late stage of the season. We've been telling Maiya it's coming, the chances she's had, and she took one today. It was probably the hardest finish out of the chances she's had in the last two games. Maiya is such a weapon, and she was fantastic today."
Tulsa had 26 shots on the night, but 14 of their shots were saved by the Blazers keeper Anika Toth.
"Once we got that goal it is difficult for any team to score on us, especially having Anika in the goal," Mann said. "They had a lot of shots, but they were long range. Tulsa did have one at the very end where they could have scored, and Anika stepped up for another clean sheet."
The Golden Hurricanes had a flurry of chances in the second half, but the UAB defense was able to hold on. The Blazers keeper Toth had eight saves in the second half. Tonight's 1-0 victory was Toth's seventh shutout of the season and 14th of her career.
Up next, UAB heads to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to take on Temple on Sunday, October 27. Kickoff is set for 10:30 a.m. CT and will air live on ESPN+.
"We are going to Temple full of confidence," Mann said. "If we can pick up that win, we will be higher on points. Hopefully we will have 15 points after Temple and then we come home for senior night and earn three straight wins going into the tournament."
