ST. THOMAS, USVI – UAB men's basketball (4-4) went on a 12-0 run late in the second half to take control in a 98-86 win over Louisiana (1-6) on Monday to close the Paradise Jam. Alejandro Vasquez led UAB with 25 points while Yaxel Lendeborg added 20 points, and Christian Coleman had a double-double.
The Blazers struggled defensively throughout the first half, allowing the Cajuns to shoot over 50 percent of the field while giving up 42 first-half points.
After Christian Coleman scored to put UAB ahead 26-22, Louisiana went on an 11-2 run to lead by five at the 4:15 mark of the first half. The Cajuns maintained the lead until the final seconds of the half when Tony Toney hit a three to cut the deficit to just two at halftime.
Louisiana extended their lead to eight points by the first media timeout of the second half. After the Blazers cut the lead back down to just 62-59 at the 11:59 mark, back-to-back buckets from the Cajuns put the lead right back at eight points.
From that point on, UAB outscored Louisiana by a margin of 39-19. Alejandro Vasquez scored 17 of his 25 points in the second half and after he hit three free throws to cut Louisiana advantage to just one, Tyren Moore hit a three to give the Blazers their first lead of the half.
From that point on, UAB turned up the intensity on the offensive and defensive end. The Blazers shot 61.8 percent from the field in the second half, including a 6-for-11 mark from three.
After Moore's three, the Blazers were able to get out and run on offense, scoring off long rebounds and turnovers. When Louisiana answered with a three, Alejandro Vasquez responded right back with a three of his own before Tyren Moore hit a deep three to push the lead to double digits.
After a quiet start to the second half, Christian Coleman picked it up in the final minutes to help the Blazers put Louisiana away and take a 98-86 win.
