BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women's soccer team (5-3-2, 2-1-1 AAC) picked up its fifth win of the season on Sunday afternoon, downing Florida Atlantic (2-6-3, 1-2-1 AAC) by a score of 1-0.
Going into halftime, the match was scoreless with both teams having five shots in the first half.
The Blazers got on the board in the 52nd minute with a goal from freshmen Mia Leath. Leath's goal was assisted by Sydney Bolinger. It was the first goal for Leath's young collegiate career and the first assist for Bolinger this season and her career.
UAB forced the Owls keeper to make three saves in the first half, applying pressure to the FAU defense.
Florida Atlantic had a flurry of chances in the second half of the match, but the Blazers defense was able to hold on. Reigning AAC Goalkeeper of the Week Anika Toth six saves on the night.
Toth earned her fifth shutout of the year and 12th of her career. Her five shutouts this year is the most she has recorded in a season.
Up next, UAB heads to Tampa, Florida to face South Florida on Thursday, Oct. 3. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. and will air live on ESPN+.
