SAN ANTONIO – The UAB Softball team (18-22, 7-9) dominates late in a conference win over UTSA (15-24, 2-14) by a score of 9-2.
UAB hit the ball 14 times which is the second most hits this season behind a 16 hit performance against Indiana State back in February. The Roadrunners started the scoring off in the first inning despite UAB normally scoring first.
UAB did score in the second inning on two three hits. Hope Tucker started us off with a bomb to left center field, which was her second of the year. Alyssa Aguilar added another one on an RBI single. Caitlin Russell came into pitch in the second inning to relieve starter Caroline McLendon. Russell has been outstanding in her recent outings.
Innings three and four saw no runs and just one hit. UAB grabbed the lead in the fifth inning after Lindsey Smith hit a squeeze bunt to score Hannah Dorsett. Smith's bunt was the third of four bunts in a row to start the fifth inning. The flood gates opened after that run in the fifth. UAB scored seven runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Dorsett Miles, and Tucker both hit RBI singles to score four runs in the sixth. Miles hit the ball up the middle to score Wiggins and Dorsett, then Miles came around to score on Tucker's single. UAB led 7-3 after six.
Miles got her third hit of the day that scored Britt Bourgoyne and Bella Wiggins. Ashlyn Shirah then walked home a run for her eighth RBI of the year. Four UAB players had multiple hits, while Hannah Miles hit the ball three times for a season high total. UTSA ended the night with a run on two hits in the bottom of the seventh.
The Blazers are just two games behind fourth place East Carolina, while UTSA are currently in last with just two conference wins.
