BIRMINGHAM – After taking the first two games of the series, UAB (4-4) dropped its second straight game to Cincinnati (5-3), 8-6 on Sunday afternoon at Young Memorial Field. The 9-inning game lasted three hours and 52 minutes, a combined 12 pitchers were used, 26 hits were collected, and 22 runners were left on base.
For the third straight game, the Bearcats scored first. After the first two hitters reached, UC scored its first run on a double steal and a Blazer error which brought home Conlan Daniel to open the scoring.
Kevin Hall Jr. began his stellar offensive day in the bottom half of the inning with a single. He would reach third on a base hit by John Paul Head and later scored on an RBI single by Landon Beaver.
Ryan Tyranski led off the Cincinnati second inning by doubling on the first pitch he saw to center field. After reaching third on a passed ball, he would score on an RBI groundout by Jackson Reardon.
The Blazers would not answer back until the bottom half of the third. It was once again Kevin Hall Jr. leading off the inning with a base hit on a two-strike count. The next two UAB hitters would reach on a walk and a base hit, respectively which would bring up Landon Beaver in another RBI situation. Beaver would reach on a fielder's choice which brought home Hall to tie the game at two.
Much like the second inning, Ryan Tyranski led off the UC fourth inning by way of a walk. Tyranski would score the go-ahead run as part of an inning where Cincinnati forced three fielder's choice plays. Jackson Reardon would score on the last FC to put the Bearcats up, 4-2.
UAB would get one back in its half of the fourth inning. Wesley Helms led the inning off with a walk and would reach second on a failed pickoff attempt. Helms would score on Kevin Hall Jr's third hit of the afternoon to cut the UC lead to 4-3.
Cincinnati's big inning came in the top of the fifth. With two on and one out, Jackson Reardon would reach first on a perfectly placed swinging bunt to extend the UC lead. Two batters later, Luke Sefcik stepped in and delivered a two-strike, two-out double to put Cincinnati up, 7-3.
Neither side would score again until the top of the seventh. Tyranski led off the inning for the third time in the afternoon with a double and would reach third on a wild pitch. With two strikes, Christian Mitchelle ripped a single to left to bring home the fourth consecutive Cincinnati run to put the Bearcats up, 8-3.
The Green and Gold would try to mount a rally beginning in the bottom of the seventh. Landon Beaver brought home his third RBI of the day which scored Alex Dupuy to cut the deficit to 8-4.
The Blazers would continue their momentum in the bottom of the eighth when Max Price would hit his second home run of the weekend off Carson Marsh to trim UC's lead to 8-5. Three batters later, Alex Dupuy, who was brought in to pitch the top of the eighth, singled through the left side to score Baylor Roberts to bring the deficit to two.
UAB would try to mount a rally in the bottom of the ninth and would bring the winning run to the plate, but the comeback bid would fall short as Cincinnati escaped with a 8-6 win.
