BIRMINGHAM – UAB Baseball (23-12, 8-3) dropped the middle game of the 3-game series to Wichita State (22-14, 6-5) by a score of 5-4 in 10 innings. The two teams combined to leave 27 runners on base in the three-hour, 40-minute game.

For the second straight game, Wichita State got on the board first with two unearned runs with both runs coming with two strikes. Ethan Gonzalez drove in the first run on a sac fly to center field and Jacob Gutierrez singled to right field to give the Shockers a 2-0 lead through two innings.

The Blazers took the lead with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth. Two of the first three hitters of the inning reached base via singles which would put runners on the corners with one out. The first UAB run came across on a wild throw to the plate which would then put two runners in scoring position. John Paul Head picked up his first hit since returning from injury as Alex Dupuy and Baylor Roberts scored to put the Green and Gold up one through four innings.

The score would hold until the top of the seventh when Wichita State would tie the game in its frame. Nolan Ganter stepped in with the bases loaded and delivered a sac fly which scored Jack Quick from third to tie the game at three.

The Shockers would regain the lead in their half of the eighth. Ethan Gonzalez led off the inning with a triple and Jacob Gutierrez singled him home as WSU took a 4-3 lead.

Down to its last three outs, UAB needed one run to extend the game. John Paul Head led off the inning with a triple of his own. With the infield drawn in, Landon Beaver dribbled a ground ball through the left side to tie the game at four.

The game would head to extras and Wichita State wasted no time. After a one-out double by Jack Quick, he would stand at third after a groundout. Owen Rush singled home Quick as the Shockers regained the lead again.

The Green and Gold tried to mount a rally in their half of the 10th, bringing the winning run to the plate but was unable to cash in as Wichita State clinched the middle game of the series, setting up Sunday's rubber match.

NOTES
- Saturday's game was the first extra inning game at Young Memorial Field since April 16, 2023, when the Blazers defeated Western Kentucky, 6-4 in 10 innings.
- The loss for UAB was the first at home since March 14 against Belmont, snapping the Green and Gold's 8-game home winning streak. It also snapped UAB's 8-game win streak in conference play.
- Landon Beaver led the team with three hits as he tied his career high. His three hits were good for his ninth multi-hit game and his second 3-hit game.
- John Paul Head picked up two hits of his own which registered his 10th multi-hit game. Head recorded multiple RBI for the eighth time this season.
- Alex Dupuy recorded his team-high 13th multi-hit game of 2026.
- Carter Samuelson tossed a career high 4.1 innings pitched and allowed zero earned runs in an outing for the third time this season.
- Konner Keplinger pitched 2.0 scoreless innings. Keplinger tossed at least two scoreless innings in an outing for the third time this season.

The Blazers and Shockers will play the rubber game on Sunday afternoon at Young Memorial Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
