BIRMINGHAM – UAB Baseball completed another improbable comeback in the late innings as the Blazers (27-15, 11-5) took down Memphis (15-25, 7-9) in 11 innings by a score of 7-6. Austin Pierzynski and Kevin Hall Jr. each hit their second home runs of the game in the Blazers' final frame to clinch the comeback win.
Memphis' Freddy Rodriguez got the game started on the second pitch he saw and hit his second home run of the season to take an early 1-0 lead.
UAB would tie the game up in the bottom of the second. Austin Pierzynski roped his fifth home run of the season to knot the game at one apiece. The home run was the Blazers' 55th of the season which broke the BBCOR era school record for most home runs in a single season.
The Tigers answered back with a pair of solo shots in the top of the fourth inning. Brady McAbee and James Smith IV went back-to-back in the frame to give Memphis a 3-1 lead.
The Blazers got a single run back in the bottom of the fifth. Kevin Hall Jr.'s first hit of the night was a no-doubter to right for his sixth home run of the year to bring the Green and Gold to within one.
UAB would take its first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Wesley Helms ripped the first pitch he saw to left center for a double which brought around Andrew Hunt to re-tie the game. The next batter, Austin Pierzynski singled through the left side to score Helms to give the Blazers a 4-3 lead.
Brady Waugh would give the Green and Gold some insurance in the bottom of the seventh. With a runner on third and one out, Waugh singled through the right side to score Landon Beaver to put UAB up two through seven innings.
Memphis would tie the game in the eighth inning with two runs. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with no outs. Brady McAbee and Shane Cox each drew bases loaded walks to tie the game at five.
The game would stay locked at five until the top of the 11th inning. With a runner on third and one out, Javon Hernandez singled through the middle of the infield to score Marcus Smith, who led off the inning with a double, to give the Tigers a 6-5 lead.
The Blazers would need a run in their final at bat to extend the game. Austin Pierzynski took care of that as he led off the inning with a rocket to left for his sixth home run of the season to tie the game at six. Two batters later, Kevin Hall Jr. stepped in and delivered with his seventh home run of the season to complete the comeback as the Blazers took game one of the series, 7-6.
