BIRMINGHAM – After falling behind by six runs early in the game, UAB came back to tie the contest in the late innings, but could not hold on as Charlotte (25-26, 10-14) prevailed over the Blazers (29-22, 13-11) by a score of 10-8 in 10 innings on Sunday. The Niners clinched the series on a 2-run home run in the top of the 10th inning.
It was the Green and Gold who got out to an early lead in the bottom of the first. Kevin Hall Jr. led off the game with a solo shot to straightaway center for his ninth of the season to open the scoring.
Charlotte bounced back with a 7-run second inning. After a lineout to begin the inning, seven straight Niners reached base on seven hits. When the dust settled, Charlotte was out to a 7-1 lead through an inning and a half.
The Blazers answered with a single tally in the bottom of the second and a four spot in the bottom of the third. Brady Waugh launched his sixth home run of the season. In the third inning, the Green and Gold led off the inning with three straight walks. A sac fly and back-to-back doubles had the Blazers within one run through three innings of play.
Both teams traded runs in the fourth inning. The Niners were able to capitalize on a leadoff walk as Dylan Koontz pushed across Robert Nedry on a sac fly to give Charlotte some insurance. UAB was able to answer back in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs, John Paul Head singled and would come around to score on a bloop double by Landon Beaver to cut the 49ers lead to 8-7.
The Blazers would tie the game in the bottom of the fifth. A walk and an error by Charlotte got the Green and Gold in business in the frame. With one out, Austin Pierzynski drove in Brady Waugh on an RBI groundout to tie the game at eight apiece.
The score would hold through the back third of the game as both UAB's Brendan Conner and Charlotte's Chase Carson were stellar out of their respective bullpens. Conner's final line was 8.0 innings and threw 105 pitches, both career highs. Carson was nearly as good as Conner, going 5.0 innings and striking out three on 76 pitches. Neither pitcher was factored into the final decision.
The Niners broke the seal in the top of the 10th, breaking a four inning scoreless streak by both teams. With one down and one on, Alec DeMartino hit his second 2-run home run of the day to put Charlotte in the lead for good. Joseph Taylor tossed the final three innings and faced just nine batters in relief of Carson and the Niners took game three and the series by a score of 10-8.
