BIRMINGHAM – UAB women's soccer (1-1-0) battled back from a two-goal halftime deficit but fell just short against Mississippi State (2-0-0), 2-1, Sunday night at PNC Field.

After the Bulldogs scored twice in the opening 26 minutes, Avery Berryman pulled the Blazers within one with her second goal of the season in the 63^rd minute. UAB continued to apply pressure late, putting two shots on frame in the final three minutes, but was unable to find the equalizer.

Mississippi State opened the scoring in the seventh minute when Hailey Johnson found the back of the net for her second goal of the season. The Bulldogs doubled their advantage in the 26^th minute as Ashley Tutas scored off an assist from Kyli Switalski.

UAB responded with a much stronger attacking effort after halftime. After being held without a shot in the opening 45 minutes, the Blazers recorded all five of their shots in the second half while limiting Mississippi State to just one.

The Blazers broke through in the 63^rd minute. Morgan Goehring set up Berryman, who scored to cut Mississippi State's advantage to 2-1. The goal marked Berryman's second of the season, while Goehring picked up her first assist.

UAB made one final push in the closing minutes. Goalkeeper Leah Parsons put a shot on target in the 88^th minute before Emily Cole followed with another attempt just 13 seconds later, but Mississippi State goalkeeper Jenny Harrison saved both to preserve the Bulldogs' one-goal advantage.

Berryman led the UAB attack with two shots, including one on goal, while Maia Sirota, Cole and Parsons each recorded an attempt. Parsons played all 90 minutes in goal and finished with two saves.

Up next, UAB faces its first road test when they travel to Western Kentucky on Thursday, August 20. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT.
