BIRMINGHAM - Shyrone Chatman scored seven of his nine points in the overtime period and three other Memphis players scored in double figures for the game as the Tigers (12-8, 6-1) defeated UAB (10-9, 3-4) 76-73 in Conference USA basketball action Saturday evening at Bartow Arena.
The teams battled back and forth throughout the first half. There were six ties and seven lead changes, the last at the 4:20 mark as Memphis went on a 9-2 run to take a 33-26 lead with 0:50 to play. The Tigers held a 33-28 lead at halftime.
Memphis maintained its lead for the first five minutes of the second half, but UAB turned up the defensive pressure and went on a 17-2 run over the next five minutes, to take its biggest lead of the game at 51-43 with 10:12 remaining in regulation. Blazer guard P.J. Arnold scored 10 points during that stretch.
The Blazers would lead until the final minute of regulation, when the Tigers tied the game on a layup by Scooter McFadgon with 13 seconds remaining.
