ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Ryan Schneider passed for 290 yards and Central Florida scored touchdowns on its first two second-half possessions to beat UAB 24-7 on Saturday night.
The Golden Knights held UAB to 111 total yards and scored a fourth-quarter touchdown. Defensive end Elton Patterson sacked Jeff Aaron in the end zone and knocked the ball loose, with nose tackle Josh McKibben recovering the fumble.
After taking a 3-0 lead on a 40-yard field goal by Javier Beorlegui on the final play of the first half, Central Florida (2-3) recovered Maurice Gallery's fumble on the second-half kickoff.
The ensuing 23-yard, eight-play drive was capped when running back Terrance Williams scored on a 1-yard run.
On Central Florida's next possession, quarterback Ryan Schneider hit wide receiver Doug Gabriel for a 64-yard touchdown pass, extending the Golden Knights' lead to 17-0.
UAB returned the ensuing kickoff 93 yards to the Central Florida 5, leading to its only points of the game. The Blazers failed to score on four consecutive running plays, but a Central Florida personal foul on fourth down gave UAB another chance. Blazers running back Kendal Gibson then found the end zone with a 1-yard run on third-and-goal.
McKibben's touchdown closed out the scoring.
Central Florida held UAB to 11 first downs and 35 yards rushing on 27 attempts. The Golden Knights had been giving up 175.2 yards per game on the ground.
