UAB Finishes Strong At Alabama Relays

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB Track and Field team had an impressive showing this weekend at the Alabama Relays in Tuscaloosa, Ala., including a first-place finish and setting a new UAB school record in the 4x1,500-meter relay.
Kristina Vaughn, Kendel Hood, Alina Varpiotaite and Sandra Lundberg recorded a first-place finish and broke the 10-year old UAB school record in the 4x1,500-meter relay with a time of 18:56.09. The previous record of 19:01.44 was set in 1999.
"This was a good meet for us," said UAB head coach Ray Stanfield. "We ran well and performed above our expectations. It's a good step in the right direction for this season."
Other top performances on Sunday, included the Blazers' distance medley relay capturing second-place with a time of 12:10.67 and a second-place finish in the shuttle hurdle relay with a time of 58.20.
On Saturday, Alina Varpiotaite won the collegiate 800-meter run after posting a time of 2:11.16.
Stephanie Gammon also recorded a second-place finish in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:47.68.
Timara McMillan set a new personal record in the 100-meter hurdles after claiming sixth place in a time of 14.34.
Kendel Hood also set a new personal best in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:40.57, which won the second heat and was good for sixth place overall.
The Blazers return to action April 8 as they head to the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn.
