KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The UAB track and field team turned in another strong day of performances on Friday as sophomore Stephanie Gammon captured first place in the 10,000-meter run and senior Alina Varpiotaite posted a regional qualifying time in the 800-meter run.
"We had a great day," said UAB head coach Ray Stanfield. "The girls performed really well despite the conditions. Stephanie and Alina really stepped it up today."
The meet was delayed in the afternoon for more than three hours after rain and inclement weather moved through the area.
The rain did little to slow down Gammon who set a new personal record in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 35:47.97. Her first-place time smashed her previous personal best of 37:28.35 set last season at the Alabama Relays.
Varpiotaite posted a sixth-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:09.08. The time regionally qualified her for the event in the NCAA South Regional Championship for the third straight year.
Other top performances for the Green and Gold included Rhiannon Johns finishing fifth in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 36:47.51. Sandra Lundberg posted a time 9:53.39 in the 3,000-meter run which was good for second place. Timara McMillan finished tenth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.04.
