UAB Posts Personal Bests At War Eagle Invitational

AUBURN, Ala. - The UAB track and field team posted numerous personal records as well as nine top-10 finishes at the War Eagle Invitational here on Friday and Saturday.
"We had a good day today," said UAB head coach Ray Stanfield. "We tried out a few different things and ran some girls in some different races. It worked quite well as we prepare to head to the Conference USA Championships in a few weeks."
Alina Varpiotaite posted the best overall finish for the Blazers after placing third in the 1,500-meter run. Her time of 4:34.08 was less than two seconds off of the UAB record of 4:32.91, which she set last season. Sandra Lundberg finished fifth in the event, posting a personal best of 4:36.74. She narrowly bested the UAB freshman record of 4:36.55 set by Lori Ursey in 1996.
In the 800-meter run, three Blazers finished in the top-10 and set personal records in the event. Kendel Hood finished seventh in 2:13.55, Bianca LeBlanc finished eighth in a time of 2:15.03 and Lauren Fayen claimed the tenth spot after crossing the line in 2:16.00.
Kristina Vaughn set a new personal best in the 5,000-meter run en route to a fifth-place finish with a time of 18:27.76.
Timara McMillan finished seventh in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 14.09.
Veronica Johnson ran her fastest time in the 400-meter dash and finished 12th in 57:04.
On Friday, Christina Chambers and Sterling Cross placed third and fifth, respectively, in the heptathlon. Chambers scored 4,035 points, including a first-place finish in the 800-meter portion of the event (2:27.35). Cross finished with 3,116 points and a first place finish in the javelin throw event (32.83m).
Other top performance for the Green and Gold this weekend, included McMillan posting a personal best in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.23 and Adriennie Bradley set a new personal best in the same event (26.22).
