BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men's soccer team looks to even up its conference record on Thursday night when it hosts FIU at BBVA Compass Field. Kick between the Blazers and Panthers is slated for 6 p.m.
UAB (2-1-2) is coming off of a 1-0 loss at Kentucky on Friday. The game was tied at 0-0 until the Wildcats netted the golden goal in the 85th minute to secure the victory.
UAB is led on the defensive side of the ball by keeper James Teal who is off to a stellar redshirt freshman season. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native ranks ninth in the NCAA in save percentage (.909), 10th in shutouts (3), 12th in goals against average (.367) and has played the 19th most minutes by any keeper in the country (490:00).
Massimo Ferrin paces the UAB offense as he leads the team with two goals and four points. The midfielder ranks seventh in Conference USA in goals and is tied for 10th in goals per game (0.4) and shots (10).
FIU enters Thursday's match with a 2-0-2 overall record with this marking its first C-USA opponent. The Panthers have a prolific offense as they ranks 16th in the country in scoring offense with 2.3 goals per game. They rank 21st in the nation in points per game (6.5) and 25th in assists per game (2.0).
Santiago Patino leads the Panther offense with four goals. He ranks sixth in the NCAA in goals per game (1.0), 10th in points per game (2.3) and 14th in shots on goal per game (2.3). He has netted at least one goal in three of the Panthers' four games including two in a 3-2 win over the College of Charleston.
UAB and FIU are meeting for the 16th time in program history with the Blazers holding the 8-6-1 advantage. The Blazers will be looking for revenge though as the Panthers knocked UAB out of the C-USA Tournament last year ending the Blazers' season.
Following Thursday's contest the Blazers have more than a week off before travelling to Old Dominion on Sept. 23. Kick between the Blazers and Monarchs is set for 6 p.m. CT.
