BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A strong second half effort proved to not be enough as the UAB men's soccer team fell 2-1 to FIU on Thursday night at BBVA Compass Field.
"We gave this game to them in the first half," head coach Mike Getman said. "I give FIU credit, they are the number three team in the NCAA Ranking Power Index (RPI) and in the first half it showed."
FIU (2-1-2, 1-0-0) took a lead in the 13th minute that it would not relinquish. Two-time Conference USA Player of the Week Santiago Patino netted a cross from Luca Giovine on a breakaway for Patino's fifth goal of the season giving the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
Less than a minute later Jorvis Ahlinvi flew a ball past UAB keeper James Teal on a shot from the top of the box scoring FIU's second and final goal.
UAB (2-2-2, 0-2-0) would not back down as forward Adam Brooker netted his first career goal on an assist from Massimo Ferrin to make the score 2-1 with 34 minutes remaining in the contest.
The Blazers' Rami Dajani got two good looks at the equalizer in the final seven minutes of the match but both headers sailed high securing the FIU victory.
"In the second half we were excellent," Getman said. "We had a great goal, had some good chances and did everything we wanted to do. But soccer is a 90-minute game and we have to play well for the full 90-minutes."
FIU outshot the Blazers 13-10 after managing to get off 11 shots in the first half. The Blazers tallied eight shots in the final 45-minutes to FIU's two.
Both keepers, Teal of UAB and Hugo Fauroux of FIU, each gathered two saves on the nigh.
"When we play our best I think we can handle anybody and we have to learn to do it for the full 90-minutes," Getman said.
UAB takes nine days off before continuing league play on Saturday, Sept. 23, at Old Dominion. The Blazers and Monarchs are set to square off at 6 p.m. CT.
