BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men's soccer team continues Conference USA play this weekend with a trip to Norfolk, Va., to take on Old Dominion. Kick off is slated for 6:00 p.m. CT on Saturday at the ODU Soccer Complex.
UAB (2-2-2, 0-2-0) is coming off of a 2-1 loss to FIU on Sept. 14 at BBVA Compass Field where two first half goals proved to be the difference maker for the Panthers. Adam Brooker netted UAB's lone goal marking the first of his career.
Offensively the Blazers are led by Massimo Ferrin who leads the team in goals (2), points (5) and shots (13). Ferrin netted goals in both of the Blazers' wins this season. Adam Brooker, Philip Makinde, Trey Nelson and David Valverde have also contributed to the scoring efforts this season.
Freshman keeper James Teal will look to continue his stellar campaign in the net this season. He ranks 20th in the NCAA in save percentage (.846) and 24th in shutouts (3) and goals against average (.621).
Old Dominion (4-1-2, 1-0-0) enters the matchup on a two-game winning streak with wins at Florida Atlantic and over VCU. The Monarchs rank second in the league in shots (98), points (41), goals (14) and goals per game (2.0).
Brandon Perdue leads the offensive attack for the Monarchs with a team best four goals. The Virginia native is tied for second in the league in shots (21) and ranks third in points (10) and points per game (1.4).
In goal the Monarchs are led by reigning C-USA Defensive Player of the Week Mertcan Akar. Akar is tied for second in the league with Teal in shutouts with three and ranks fourth in the conference in shutouts per game with 0.43.
UAB and Old Dominion are meeting for the ninth time in program history with the Monarchs holding a 7-0-1 advantage. The two squads battled to a double overtime 0-0 tie in Birmingham last season.
