BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UAB volleyball plays host to Alabama State before the beginning of conference play.
UAB (6-8) is coming off its best weekend of the season after winning all three of its games during the Fight Like Hal Memorial Tournament. The Blazers won two of the three matches in straight sets while the third match went just four sets.
"It was a great weekend for us," head coach Kerry Messersmith said. "They team played extremely well and together. We were tested a little at times but we responded well and overcame the adversity. That was great to see."
Gabby Deshotel leads the Blazers in kills this season with 169 while Haley Jared is hot on her heels with 168 kills. Senior Erika Zembyla is third on the team in kills with 138. All three have an attack percentage over .200.
Jared and Kenley Adams are tied with the team lead in double-doubles with seven so far this season. The pair have notched double-doubles in the same game four times.
Alabama State (6-7) is coming off a 2-1 weekend at the Tulane Invitational and has won four of its last six games. Ni'yesha Brown and Briana Dorsey each have over 100 kills and Krysta Medearis is close behind with 99.
"They are a good team, very talented, will battle hard and give us a strong final test before we jump into conference play," Messersmith said.
The Blazers and the Hornets met last season in Montgomery, Ala. with the Green and Gold coming away victorious in straight sets. UAB leads the all-time series 16-5.
