BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men's soccer team battled to a 0-0 double overtime tie against Missouri State Monday night at BBVA Compass Field. The Blazers move to 2-0-2 on the season while the Bears even their record at 1-1-1.
"I thought we gave away a win," head coach Mike Getman said. "Every game up until today we've been really sharp and focused and played the way we were supposed to."
UAB turned the jets on late firing seven shots in the final 30 minutes of regulation forcing Missouri State's keeper, Liam Priestley, to make five saves to keep the game at 0.
Senior Rami Dajani took one of the Blazers' best shot attempts at the 86-minute mark with a ball that Priestley was able to knock high and out of bounds.
Minutes later UAB found itself once again in scoring territory. Adam Brooker received a cross in the middle of a crowd of Missouri State defenders and managed to get a shot off forcing Priestley to once again make a game saving catch.
"The second half we were much better. We can't afford to give away 45 minutes against a good team," Getman said.
UAB took a total of 19 shots compared to Missouri State's nine. In tie games this season the Blazers are outshooting their opponents 36-24. The Blazers have also played to a draw in consecutive home matches for the first since 1980, the second year of the program.
Goalkeeper James Teal once again proved his dominance in the net collecting his third shutout in four games this season.
Freshman Donovan Watson made his UAB debut becoming the fifth Blazer this season to make their debut for the Green and Gold.
UAB returns to the pitch Friday night when it travels to Lexington, Kentucky to take on the Wildcats in the Blazers first Conference USA matchup of the season. Kick is set for 6:30 PM CT.
Missouri State returns home to face the Tigers of Memphis on Sunday at Allison South Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 2:00 PM.
