UAB Improves to 7-1 With 19-0 Shutout at UTEP

EL PASO, Texas – Behind yet another dominant defensive effort, the UAB football team improved to 7-1 overall and 5-0 in Conference USA with a 19-0 shutout victory over UTEP on Saturday night at the Sun Bowl.
UAB tallied a season-high 12 tackles for loss and held the Miners (0-8, 0-4 C-USA) to just 19 yards rushing and 120 total yards.
The Blazers recorded their third shutout of the season and have now held their opponents scoreless in 16 of the last 20 quarters. UAB is allowing just 13.2 points per game this year.
Spencer Brown rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown, and in the process moved into sixth place on UAB's career rushing list (2,023). It was his fourth 100-yard rushing game of the season and the 10th of his career. Brown has 694 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns this season.
Conference USA's No. 1 rushing offense, UAB compiled 265 yards on the ground and has now rushed for over 200 yards in seven of eight games, while adding two additional rushing scores. UAB has now scored multiple rushing touchdowns every game this year.
The Blazers took the lead on their second possession with a 15-yard rushing touchdown from Brown. Brown's 11th rushing touchdown of the season is one more than his total of 10 as a true freshman last year.
Nick Vogel tacked on a 36-yard field goal late in the first quarter and the defense would take it from there for the remainder of the game. UAB held the Miners to just 72 yards of total offense in the first half and tallied seven tackles for loss which guided the Blazers to a 10-0 halftime lead.
With UAB threatening early in the third quarter, UTEP had a goal line stand on fourth-and-one, but the Blazers once again swung momentum back to UAB with a safety on the ensuing play.
UTEP tried to run the ball out of the end zone, but Anthony Rush forced a fumble which the Miners recovered and moved the score to 12-0 in favor of UAB. The Blazers have now had safeties in back-to-back games.
Tyler Johnston III added UAB's final points of the game on a 4-yard rush with 4:10 left to play in the game, giving the Blazers a 19-0 lead which would be the final margin of victory.
UAB has now won six straight games and remains in first place in Conference USA.
The Blazers now return to Legion Field for their next two games against UTSA (11/3) and Southern Miss (11/10).
