UAB Hits the Road for the Auto Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Continuing its two-game winning streak, the UAB volleyball team takes its 8-3 record on the road this weekend to Michigan State for the Auto-Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational.
UAB will face off with Western Michigan on Friday, September 14 at 3:30 p.m. before playing Michigan State and Albany on Saturday, September 15 at 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., respectively. The Blazers' match with Western Michigan, Albany, and Michigan state will be available via livestream on the Big 10 Network with links found on the UAB volleyball schedule page.
The Blazers enter the tournament weekend after the team earned its 700th win in program history, beating North Dakota 3-0 in the Big Orange Bash. UAB also swept its in-state rival Troy, 25-17, 27-25, 25-19 to close out last week.
UAB will need to continue its steadfast play this weekend as Western Michigan (9-3) went 2-0 during the Delta Hotel by Marriott Kalamazoo Conference Center Tournament. Michigan State enters the tournament with a winning record of 9-1 as well as having home court advantage. Albany (4-5) has swept two of its last three matches and are currently on a three-game win streak.
UAB is 0-3 all-time against its three opponents this weekend with one loss to each team.
Redshirt Senior Victoria Young was named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week for her performance last week. She played in all four of UAB's matches, earning 19 blocks, 22 kills and adding seven service aces.
Emma Mitchell had another solid week as she picked up 40 kills, 37 digs and six blocks alongside Alex Kells who earned 28 kills, 20 digs and four blocks. Abby Carlile gained a hitting percentage of .348 with 45 kills while Shelby Holderfield earned a total of 9 kills, 144 assists and a hitting percentage of .318 over the week.
