BIRMINGHAM- The UAB men's soccer team is set to host No. 10 Charlotte in the first Conference USA showdown at the newly renovated BBVA Field this Saturday at 7 p.m.
The Blazers and 49ers will square off after each recorded 1-1 2OT draws in the opening weekend of C-USA play.
UAB (1-3-1, 0-0-1) drew even with Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va. last Saturday and look to keep sophomore midfielder Blake White hot. White has scored four goals in the last three games to total four goals on the season, just one goal short of his team leading five goals scored in 2018.
Charlotte (3-0-2, 0-0-1) comes into the weekend ranked No. 10 nationally after drawing even with No. 21 Kentucky on Sunday. The 49ers are led by their defense, starting with goalkeeper Elliot Panicco who has only allowed two goals this season. The senior keeper has registered a C-USA leading three shutouts in five games. Anchoring the backline is redshirt sophomore defender Delasi Baste. Baste was named C-USA Defensive Player of the Week last week for his 220 minutes of action in which he helped the defense hold two nationally ranked opponents to one goal.
"We talk a lot as a group about opportunities," said head coach Jeff Kinney. "We are fortunate in this league to be tested on a weekly basis. Playing the No. 10 team in the country is another huge opportunity for this team. I am sure our guys will be up for the task as will our fans."
Despite the difference in records, UAB and Charlotte have almost identical offensive numbers on the season. The two teams are tied for fourth in C-USA in goals with seven, tied for fifth in assists with four, and tied for third in shots with 64. Charlotte leads the league in corner kicks earned with 36, but UAB follow closely behind in third place with 34 corners.
There will be a free shuttle to BBVA Field following the conclusion of the UAB football game on Saturday afternoon. Fans who ride the shuttle from the Hill Center to Legion Field for the football game are encouraged to ride the soccer shuttle to BBVA Field after the game.
Fans who present a football ticket at the gate will receive free admission to the game.
The first 100 fans will receive a free food voucher from the marketing table. The voucher can be redeemed at the concession stand for a hotdog and popcorn or nachos.
Men's soccer season tickets are on sale by purchasing the 2019-20 Gold Card for $65. The Gold Card is an exclusive offer that grants you admission into all UAB men's and women's soccer, volleyball, women's basketball, baseball and softball events for the upcoming academic year.
