BIRMINGHAM- The UAB men's soccer team was shut out by No. 16 FIU in its third straight loss Saturday night at BBVA Field by a score of 2-0.
The second ranked offense in the country was too much for the Blazers to handle as FIU defeated UAB off two goals from midfielder Alban Rousselet.
UAB (1-6-1, 0-2-1) was held to two shots in the first 45 minutes as FIU controlled the ball for the majority of the first half. The Panthers got on the board in the 37th minute when Rousselet's shot from 30 yards out took a bad bounce past Julian Mehl to put FIU up 1-0.
FIU (7-0-2, 3-0-0) went into the half outshooting the Blazers 10-2. Six of the Panthers 10 shots were on goal.
In the 56th minute Rousselet found the back of the net again from inside the box off a ball from Anthony Cousins at the end line. The goal would be the only shot on goal for FIU in the second half.
The Blazers put pressure on FIU in the second half outshooting the panthers 7-3. In the 59th minute junior Joseph Buete fired a shot from 25 yards out that was knocked down by the FIU goalkeeper. Minutes later sophomore Blake White found an opening but fired just wide of the net.
"Tonight was the tale of two halves for us again," said head coach Jeff Kinney. "We came out timid and refused to take the game to them. Fortunately, we were able to change that at halftime, but you can't give up 45 minutes to a team of FIU's caliber. We will regroup and start preparing for Marshall."
The Blazers will travel to Huntington, W.Va. to take on Marshall next Saturday, Oct. 5 at 6 p.m.
