BIRMINGHAM — The UAB Track & Field team opened up their season at the BSC Panther Indoor Icebreaker, where the tone was set for the 2022-23 season. The Blazers finished with 13 personal bests and seven season-opening bests.
"Overall, we had a solid opening meet," said head coach Kurt Thomas "It's great to see athletes get back in the groove of competing, seeing how freshmen handle the meet and seeing their hard work pay off."
Performances included a first-place finish from Lauren Charlton, who participated in her first-ever indoor meet in the 3K. Laney Kronz also stood out with a personal record in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.07.
In addition to the personal improvements, the Green and Gold tallied 12 top-ten finishes. On top of a third-place high jump performance from Nia Hill (1.60m), Makiyah Sills was able to claim a second-place finish in the 60m hurdles (8.62).
QUOTES FROM KURT THOMAS
"Mak, Kat, Laney, Taylor Washington all hurdled well. Trinity and Nia had great pole vault and high jump competitions; Tia Landrum jumped well in both the long and triple jumps."
"The throwers opened up well also. This is just a starting point, we need to continue to improve over the break and be prepared when we return in January, but I'm proud of how they competed today."
