BIRMINGHAM – Concluding its non-conference schedule, the UAB women's basketball team heads to Philadelphia this Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 20-21, for the Hawk Classic Hosted by Saint Joseph's.
UAB (8-2) opens play on Wednesday at 1 p.m. ET/12 p.m. CT against Wagner (2-7). The Blazers will then play either host SJU (9-1) or New Hampshire (5-6) on Thursday. The Blazers have won two straight games and six of their last seven contests.
Sophomore guard Mia Moore and freshman forward Jade Weathersby swept the American Athletic Conference weekly awards as Moore is the reigning AAC Player of the Week and Weathersby the Freshman of the Week.
In UAB's only game last week against South Carolina State, Moore notched her fifth double-double of the season with 21 points and 12 rebounds. It was Moore's fifth time scoring 20 or more points and she has now grabbed 10+ rebounds in four of her last five games.
She continues to be one of the most dominant players in the American and leads the league in rebounds per game (9.9) and 3-point field goal percentage (.500), while also ranking third in free throw percentage (.867), fourth in points per game (18.4) and fifth in both field goal percentage (.492) and steals per game (2.00).
Weathersby had 15 points and six rebounds against SC State on 4-of-7 shooting and 6-of-7 at the line. Weathersby has now scored in double figures five times this season which have come in a span of UAB's last six games.
Weathersby is having an outstanding rookie season, averaging 10.0 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. She is 39-of-46 at the free throw line and her percentage of 84.8 percentage is fourth highest in the AAC, while her 6.1 rebounds per game ranks her 16th and her blocks per game average of 1.00 is 14th.
Sophomore point guard Denim DeShields has also been a catalyst for UAB's early season success as her 6.2 assists per game average is tops in the AAC. DeShields is five points away from 500 in her career and in 41 career games she carries an average of 12.1 points per game.
Following the Hawk Classic, UAB opens AAC play on Dec. 30 at Florida Atlantic, followed by returning home to host Memphis on Jan. 3.
