UAB Defeats Auburn in Walk-Off Fashion

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB Blazers (10-18) entered the ninth inning tied with the Auburn Tigers (18-10-1), but quickly loaded the bases before Henry Hunter hit a walk-off RBI single to secure the 6-5 win on Tuesday, April 4 at Regions Field.

The Blazers collected four runs during their first at bat which included walking in two runs and a two-run single after loading the bases three times. Auburn tied the game after having collected one run in the third inning and three runs in the fourth before taking the lead, for the first time, in the seventh. UAB responded in the seventh with a single run to bring the game to a score of 5-5. The game stood tied until the bottom of the ninth when two singles and an intentional walk put a Blazer on each base before Hunter singled to left field to bring in the game winning run.

Christian Clack (1-0) received his first win of the year after he threw a shutout one and one third of an inning with two strikeouts. Braxton Shelton started on the mound for UAB and threw four complete innings while he allowed four runs – earned – on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Thomas Ballard and Colin Daniel, who struck out Auburn in order, both threw shutouts during their one inning on the mound. Ben Abernathy allowed one run – earned – off two hits through three batters faced before Carson Knight posted zeros across the line during his two thirds of an inning. Leo Harris also threw two thirds of an inning and allowed two walks before Clack entered the game in the eighth.

UAB out-hit Auburn 11-7 where three of those hits came from Blazer Tyler Waugh (3-for-4) who collected his fifth multi-hit game of the year. Waugh reached base four times after he drew a walk in the first followed by two singles and a double. Mayes White (2-for-4) and Christian Hall (2-for-3) also collected a multi-hit game. White posted his first multiple RBI game of the year after he hit a two-run single in the first to extend the Blazers' lead 4-0. In the sixth, White reached base from a single to the right side of the field followed by stealing second – his first stolen base of the year. Hall collected two singles – one in the first and one in the fifth – to extend his hit streak to four games.

Four other Blazers recorded a hit – Blayze Berry, Logan Braunschweig, Nick Hollifield and Henry Hunter. Braunschweig extended his hit streak to double digits (10) and collected two RBIs while Hunter collected an RBI from his walk-off single. Berry and Hollifield both collected singles during the game.

UAB will quickly turnaround and travel to Dallas, Texas to play Dallas Baptist University for a three-game Conference USA series. The series begins Thursday, April 6 with first pitch set for 6 P.M.
