Calderon Scores Late to Give Men’s Soccer Win Over Georgia State
8/27/2024 11:33:00 PM | Men's Soccer
BIRMINGHAM – UAB Men's Soccer (1-1) picked up its first win of the season over Georgia State on Tuesday night after Isaac Calderon scored the game winner in the 84th minute for the 1-0 victory.
David Lilly earned his first win as a Blazer in his second match as the UAB head coach.
"We've had to wait a long time for our first win in a while." Lilly said, "I thought we played well for periods and thought we were pushing for the first goal of the game, trying to get it. Then we had to suffer at the end of the game for long periods. We didn't know whether it was going to come or not, but it was obviously a great feeling to get that win and get that over the board. Hopefully we can keep pushing from here now."
UAB outshot the Panthers 16-6 while putting four shots on goal. The Blazers maintained pressure on the GSU defense throughout the match, while the defense kept the visitors at bay.
Ivan Jolivet nearly put the Blazers in front in the 27th minute, but his shot from distance hit the crossbar.
The Blazers had a few early chances in the second half as Humphrey Doh and Ivan Jolivet were each able to get a shot on goal. Tony Kim nearly connected with Alan Melendez on a corner, but the header went wide of the goal.
Georgia State had their best chance of the night in the 52nd minute, but Jonathan Munteanu's diving save kept the match scoreless.
UAB broke through in the 84th minute after Jake Kellerhals found Isaac Calderon on the edge of the box and Calderon tucked it into the top right corner of the goal with his left foot. The Blazers were able to run out the final minutes to hold on for the win.
