UAB Women’s Soccer Opens Conference With 2-1 Win at UTSA

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The UAB women's soccer team (4-2-1, 1-0-0 AAC) battled to a 2-1 win at UTSA on Thursday night to begin conference play.
The first half of the match went scoreless with both teams taking few shots.
Coming out of halftime, the Roadrunners (5-3-0, 0-1-0 AAC) were the first to score in the 49th minute with a goal from Addy Johnson. Johnson's goal was assisted by Olivia Alvarez and Michelle Polo.
UTSA fouled the Blazers in the penalty arc, allowing UAB to take a free kick. Maia Sirota took the shot and netted it in the bottom left of the net to equalize the match 1-1 in the 57th minute. For Sirota, it was her first collegiate goal.
With five minutes left in the match, the Roadrunners were called for a handball. Abbey Burns was called on to take the penalty kick in the 85th minute and scored the game-winning goal in the upper 90 to put the Blazers up 2-1. The goal marked Burns' fifth goal this season.
Kendall Page played all 90 minutes at UTSA which got her over 4,000 career minutes at UAB (4,040 total minutes).
Tonight's victory was the first conference opener win since 2022 and the first since the Blazers joined the American Athletic Conference last season.
Up next, UAB is back home next Thursday, Sept. 19 to host No. 7 Memphis at PNC Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and will air on ESPN+.
