Volleyball Wins Bellarmine Classic

LOUISVILLE - The UAB Volleyball team won two out of three games on the weekend including the first Big 12 win in 16 years. The Blazers won the tournament going 2-1 with a win over Cincinnati.
Bellarmine
The first match up between UAB and the host Bellarmine ended in a 3-1 win for the Knights. This was UAB's only loss of the tournament. The Knights won sets one and two, before UAB dominated the third set 25-14. The Blazers totaled six blocks in that third set. Bellarmine ended the game on a kill by Addison Foote to win 25-23.
Cincinnati
The Blazers defeated the former Conference-USA opponent Cincinnati for the first time since 1994 by a score of 3-1. It was a team effort with four Blazers grabbing double digit kills and a season high of 55 kills and 13 blocks. Set one went to the Bearcats before UAB won three straight sets to win the match. Cincinnati led almost the entire first set winning 25-20. With a kill by freshman Abby Jones, UAB jumped out to a 6-3 lead in set #2. The Blazers never looked back and won the set 25-21. Set three and four were only decided by two points each. UAB totaled five aces during those two sets and also added 3.0 blocks. UAB won sets three and four 25-23 and 25-23.
IU Indy
UAB continued their winning ways by beating IU Indy (formerly IUPUI) 3-1. The last match of the tournament was once again a four set match. UAB dominated the first set only allowing 13 Jaguar points. UAB had 11 blocks in the game followed by two double digit kill performances from Abby Jones and Kelsey Smith. Jorda Crook also added nine kills herself following a week as the AAC Offensive Player of the Week. IU Indy pushed the Blazers in sets three and four, but 7.0 blocks in the third and only two errors in the fourth gave UAB the victory.
Big Performances
Mia Reese earned a spot as the Most Valuable Player for the tournament. She grabbed 36 kills with a 0.281 hitting %. She was pivotal in the team's win over Cincinnati with 17 kills, four digs, and 0.5 blocks. Madison page also made headlines by finding a spot on the All-Tournament team. She finished the tournament with 16 blocks and 11 kills.
