Vasquez Leads Blazers to 83-51 Win Over Tulsa

BIRMINGHAM – Alejandro Vasquez scored 27 points to lead UAB men's basketball (8-7, 1-1 AAC) to their first conference win of the season in an 83-51 victory over Tulsa (6-9, 0-2 AAC).
The Blazers led wire-to-wire en route to their largest margin of victory against a Division I opponent since the 2022-23 season.
UAB pulled ahead with an 14-2 run to take a 22-10 lead at the 10:53 mark of the first half. Ja'Borri McGhee scored seven of the Blazers' first 11 points in the contest.
The Blazers went on a 13-0 run to break the game open late in the first half, holding the Golden Hurricane scoreless for six minutes until the final second of the half.
Alejando Vasquez scored 14 of his 27 points in the first half to help the Blazers to a 42-22 lead at the break. UAB held Tulsa to just 29 percent shooting from the field over the first 20 minutes.
In the second half, Vasquez picked up where he left off, scoring UAB's first four points. The Blazers' extended their lead to 56-26 at the 15:54 mark, forcing a Tulsa timeout after a 14-4 run to start the half.
Christian Coleman scored eight of his 14 points in the second half to help spark the Blazers. With 4:11 to go, Coleman put an exclamation point on the UAB win after Tony Toney threw him a lob off the backboard for an alley-oop.
The Blazers picked up their first American Conference win of the season by a score of 83-51 over Tulsa.

The Blazers will host Tulane on Tuesday, January 7 at Bartow Arena at 6:30 p.m. CT.

- UAB held Tulsa to just 51 points, the fewest points allowed by the Blazers since December 12, 2021 vs. Millsaps.
- The Blazers' 32-point margin of victory is its largest against a Division I opponent since November 7, 2022 against Alabama State.
- Alejandro Vasquez scored 27 points, just two points shy of his career high, for his sixth game of 20+ points as a Blazer.
- Christian Coleman scored 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. His 13 boards are a career best mark.
- Ja'Borri McGhee scored 12 points while shooting 2-for-3 from beyond the arc. He also added three assists and did not record a turnover.
- Yaxel Lendeborg scored nine points, grabbed 11 rebounds, dished out four assists and blocked four shots in the win.
