UAB Opens Series With Win Over Tulane

BIRMINGHAM – UAB (16-10, 2-2) took the opening game of the series on Friday night as the Blazers took down Tulane (14-13, 2-2) by a score 9-6. The Green and Gold once led 9-0, but Tulane mounted a comeback, scoring six in the ninth inning.
UAB scored first for the 14th time this season. The Blazers began their scoring in the bottom of the second inning. Wesley Helms singled on a hit-and-run to score Brady Waugh to put the Blazers up, 1-0. With two outs, Kevin Hall Jr. singled on the first pitch he saw to score Andrew Hunt. The next hitter was John Paul Head who doubled home Helms and Hall for his team-leading 32nd RBI to give UAB a 4-0 lead through two innings.
In the fourth inning, UAB would add to its lead on Kevin Hall Jr.'s second RBI knock of the night. Baylor Roberts would score on the hit to put the Blazers up, 5-0.
Three more runs would cross the plate for the Green and Gold in the bottom half of the fifth. Wesley Helms singled through the left side on an 0-2 pitch to score Brady Waugh. With the bases loaded, Kevin Hall Jr. tied his career-high with his third hit as well as setting his career-high with third and fourth RBI of the evening. Helms and Andrew Hunt scored to give the Blazers an 8-0 lead.
The Green and Gold pushed a single run across in the bottom of the sixth on a bases loaded walk by Austin Pierzynski which put UAB up nine heading into the final third of the game.
Mason Steele was stellar on the mound for the Blazers as the junior put up his fourth straight start of at least 6.0 innings. Steele tossed seven shutout innings, struck out five, and allowed two hits as he picked up his third win of the season.
Tulane would mount a massive comeback in the ninth inning. The Green Wave plated six runs in the inning and eventually brought the tying run to bat in the top of the ninth. Brendan Conner would pick up two strikeouts in the inning as the Blazers held on for the 3-run victory to open the series.
NOTES
- UAB advances to 13-4 at home this season. The Blazers are averaging 9.53 runs per game at Young Memorial Field in 2026.
- With three hits tonight, Kevin Hall Jr. is now 20-for-49 (.408) this season at home.
- The Blazers are 12-2 when scoring first overall this season.
- All 16 of UAB's wins this season have come when scoring at least eight runs.
- Mason Steele pitched his first scoreless outing of the season while tying his career-high with 7.0 innings pitched. He accomplished the feat by throwing a career-high 103 pitches.
- Kevin Hall Jr. set his career-high with four RBI and tied his career-high with three hits. Hall is now tied with Alex Dupuy with nine multi-hit games this season.
- John Paul Head recorded his eighth multi-hit game with two hits tonight. Head is tied with Wesley Helms, who also had two hits in the game.
- Helms carries a 13-game on-base streak into Saturday.
- Baylor Roberts tallied his sixth multi-hit game and his third of that kind in his last five games. Roberts also upped his on-base streak to 16 games.
UAB and Tulane play the middle game of the 3-game set on Saturday. First pitch from Young Memorial Field is slated for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
