SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – In a pivotal series to close out the regular season, UAB (30-23, 14-11) took game one over UTSA (35-18, 16-9) on Thursday night by a score of 7-6 to stay alive for a regular season conference championship. Two home runs and a gutsy effort on the mound by Mason Steele clinched the one-run victory for the Blazers.

The Green and Gold got on the board first in the top of the second with a pair of two-strike, two-run base hits. Wesley Helms pushed across the first runs of the game with a single to center, scoring Alex Dupuy and Brady Waugh. Three batters later, it was Kevin Hall Jr.'s turn to plate two with a single of his own as Helms and Austin Pierzynski scored to put the Blazers up, 4-0.

The Roadrunners would get a run across in the bottom half of the second. Diego Diaz homered for the sixth time this season which cut the Blazer lead to 4-1.

UTSA would gain the lead on a couple of two-run home runs in the bottom of the third. Caden Miller's eighth of the season and Andrew Stucky's 11th gave the Roadrunners a 5-4 lead through three innings of play.

The Green and Gold regained the lead in the top half of the fourth. With a runner on, Landon Beaver cranked the first pitch he saw from the first UTSA reliever over the center field wall for his sixth of the season to give the Blazers a 6-5 lead.

Baylor Roberts provided UAB with some insurance in the top of the sixth. Roberts led off the inning with a solo home run for his fourth of the year to give UAB a two run advantage.

UTSA would homer for the fourth time in the game in the bottom of the eighth inning. Caden Miller's second home run of the game sailed over the right field wall to cut UAB's lead to one.

Contrary to his stat line, UAB's Mason Steele grinded out 8.1 strong innings and did not reach 100 pitches until the ninth inning. Steele struck out four and walked just one and picked up his team high sixth win of the season. Chase Ingram came on in relief of Steele, recording a strikeout and a ground out to seal the 7-6 win over UTSA.

NOTES
- The win is the 30th for the Blazers this season, joining the 2022 team for the only times the feat has been accomplished this decade.
- Landon Beaver and Andrew Hunt were the lone hitters in the UAB lineup to record multi-hit games. Beaver ties Brady Waugh with his 19th multi-hit game while Hunt tallies his 14th.
- The Green and Gold blasted two home runs in the game, good for their 73rd and 74th long balls of the season. UAB is now seven home runs away from tying the school record for most home runs in a single season.
- The Blazers now have 21 multi-home run games in 2026.
- Seven different players scored for UAB on Thursday.
- Mason Steele recorded career highs in innings pitched (8.1) and total pitches (102).

UAB and UTSA square off for game two of the 3-game series on Friday night. First pitch from Roadrunner Field is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
