BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Coming off a 3-1 weekend, the UAB volleyball team heads south to Montgomery to square off with Alabama State on Tuesday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m.
The Blazers (5-2) picked up three wins over the weekend at the Skyhawk Invitational which included wins over Central Arkansas, Florida A&M and UT-Martin. UAB was riding a five-game winning streak going into the weekend's final match against Memphis, but fell in three sets to the Tigers.
Several Blazers had big weekends including Abby Carlile who scored 54 kills, hit .373 percent while tallying 15 digs and getting 13 blocks. The Southlake, Texas native set a new career high in kills against Central Arkansas with 19 while she hit .429 percent.
Sophomore setter Shelby Holderfield keyed the offense with 174 assists and averaged 11.6 assists per set over the four match tournament. She chipped in 10 kills, four service aces and picked up 42 digs.
Holderfield was named the Skyhawk Invitational MVP and was named to the All-Tournament team along with teammates Carlile and Emma Mitchell.
UAB and Alabama State have met 22 times on the court with the Blazers holding a 16-6 advantage in the all-time series. However, Alabama State won last season's match up in four sets.
The Hornets currently sit at 3-4 on the year and have lost three-straight matches in straight sets.
"I'm excited to play our first in-state opponent and compete against Alabama State," head coach Amy Pauly said. "Coach Penny Lucas-White always has a squad that plays hard and is fundamentally sound and I think it'll be a good test for our team. It's another road match in a tough gym."
