BIRMINGHAM – The UAB men's soccer team continues its Conference USA slate on Saturday with a home matchup against South Carolina. Kickoff for Saturday's match at BBVA Field is set for 7 p.m.
After their midweek game against FGCU had to be abandoned due to ongoing heavy rain and lightning in Birmingham, the Blazers will look to earn their first C-USA victory of the season against the Gamecocks (3-6-1).
UAB's match against South Carolina will stream live on CUSA.tv. Fans will also be able to follow this weekend's matchup via live stats.
LAST TIME OUT
The Blazers only played just over 16 minutes in Wednesday's match against FGCU before it was delayed due to lightning strikes in the area. The game was eventually canceled after heavy rain and lightning strikes continued near BBVA Field.
In its most recent completed matchup against No. 10 Kentucky, UAB kept pace with the Wildcats on their home turf until the 84th minute, which is when Kentucky netted a goal off a corner kick to extend its lead to a two-goal margin.
UAB goalkeeper Seth Torman shined in net for the Blazers, setting a new career-high with 11 saves. Nine of Torman's 11 stops came in the second half, keeping his team within striking distance until the final few minutes.
After Kentucky snatched a 1-0 lead just over two minutes into the match, Curtis DeLeon knotted the contest at 1-1 in the sixth minute with his second goal of the season. Curtis' brother, Shane DeLeon, dished out the primary assist, while Teodor Thorvaldsen earned the secondary assist with a cross from the left flank.
Senior Nathaniel St. Louis maintains the team lead in points (11), goals (five), assists (one), shots (18) and shots on goal (13). Curtis DeLeon's second goal of the season in Sunday's match now makes him one of four Blazers with multiple scores.
THE SERIES VS. SOUTH CAROLINA
Saturday night's contest marks the third time head coach Jeff Kinney has faced the Gamecocks during his UAB tenure. Kinney earned his first conference victory over South Carolina in 2019, shutting out the Gamecocks 1-0 at BBVA Field. A first-half goal from Teodor Thorvaldsen proved to be the difference in the defensive battle.
SCOUTING SOUTH CAROLINA
South Carolina enters its first season under head coach Tony Annan. Annan, only South Carolina's second head coach in program history, worked the past six years at Atlanta United of Major League Soccer.
Annan's team holds a 3-6-1 record through his first 10 matches as head coach, notching victories over Winthrop, Mercer and Gardner-Webb.
The Gamecocks have eight different goal scorers this season with sophomores Peter Clement and Jordan Matthews leading the way with two goals apiece. In net, Ryan Bilichuk and Tristan Himes have split time for the visitors. Himes leads USC with 21 saves, a .614 save percentage and two victories between the posts.
The Gamecocks have been accurate on their shot attempts in 2021, firing 43 of their 105 attempts (41%) on frame. Opponents have scored on 16% of their shots against South Carolina this season.
COMMON OPPONENTS
The teams share eight common opponents during the 2021 season. Seven of the eight common opponents common in Conference USA play, while the lone shared nonconference opponent for the two teams was Gardner-Webb.
